AKU, the Italian trekking footwear specialists

We donโ€™t think of the people who buy our products as consumers. We view them as knowledgeable users of practical, original products. These are ethically manufactured products โ€“ products with tangible value that are made to last. We can all do something to build stronger communities, to protect the environment โ€“ to have a better future.

Over thirty years of dedication…

AKU is an Italian enterprise with artisan origins. Founded by Galliano Bordin more than thirty years ago, AKU designs and manufactures high-quality shoes for mountaineering, hunting, military and casual wear. Every model in the collection, from mountaineering to active leisure wear, is the result of genuine dedication, rooted in Italy’s distinguished manufacturing tradition.

The companyโ€™s research on new technologies as well as the design and production of its top range models remain at the Montebelluna factory, in the Treviso Province and in Italyโ€™s historic sports footwear district. AKU has a second manufacturing plant in Cluj Napoca, Romania and has recently opened a third one in Simanovci, Serbia. Parts that make up the AKU models are produced in these locations.

The company operates on a global scale and covers over thirty markets in Europe, Asia and North America.

Inspired by mountains

AKUโ€™s refined, exclusive designs have won the recognition of the company as an undisputed leader in fit and comfort even for their most technical items. AKU is theย Italian specialist in trekking footwear.

The people who live and work in the mountains, as well as nature lovers more generally, have been the inspiration behind AKUโ€™s manufacturing. In fact, many of the people who wear AKU footwear are farmers, lumberjacks and shepherds and not only hiking, trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts.

Caring for the environment

Taking care of nature and of the places where their footwear is used is a responsibility that AKU takes on wholeheartedly and a commitment that stems from the Companyโ€™s background and inspiration. AKU uses manufacturing methods that have minimal impact on the environment, while providing maximum transparency about product origins. To support this, in 2018, AKU became the first company in the footwear sector to calculate, declare and certify their environmental impact for one of their products, the Bellamont Plus. The information resulting from these environmental impact calculations highlighted the most impacting areas and led to the assessment of new ways of reducing the manufacturing footprint on the environment.

The results of the study, which was carried out using the International EPDยฎ System, are available on the www.environdec.com website.
